Chapter Three

Sophie sprinted to her car, which looked like a rubbish mobile next to the Jaguar it was parked beside. It had been another long night of classes, and now Sophie was to meet the plumber Richard had told her to contact. She’d purposefully scheduled the plumber to come to the Barrister mansion around 6:30 pm to give her time to travel there after class. Now, looking at her watch, she realized she should have told him to come at 7:00 pm.

“Hey, Sophie!” Gunther’s sudden appearance at her window had Sophie practically jumping out of her skin.

“Oh, God!” she exclaimed. “Gunther, you almost made me whiz myself!”

Gunther chuckled. "Yeah, I often have that effect on people,” he joked. “Listen, I was just wondering if you’d given my invitation any thought.”

“Oh, geez,” Sophie thought. She really didn’t have time to be dealing with Gunther right now.

“Listen, Gunther,” she started, “You’re a great guy, I just can’t deal with…” she trailed off and made the mistake of glancing at his missing leg.

“What?!”Gunther demanded. “You can’t deal with a guy who only has one leg?!” He swore. “God, I really thought you were different!” he declared, turning away in a huff.

Sophie didn’t have time to bemoan her communication choices. Perhaps, it was for the best. It was clear that Gunther was the persistent sort. Maybe letting him down hard was the only way to get him to leave her alone. Besides, how was Sophie ever to move past the grief of losing her father if the man she was dating constantly rekindled painful memories? She revved off toward the Barrister mansion, her car wheezing the whole way.

When she entered the house, the lights were on, and she could hear the sound of metal clanking on metal. Clearly, the plumber had already arrived and started work.

“Hiya!” she called. Nobody answered. Still, the clanking continued. Perhaps, this plumber was the type of guy to plug himself into music while he worked… or, maybe he simply couldn’t hear Sophie over the sound of the clanking. “Anyone here?” Sophie called again, this time louder. Again, there was no answer. Assuming the plumber simply couldn’t hear her, Sophie started toward the kitchen. The clanking grew louder and louder as she neared the breakfast nook. No wonder the plumber couldn’t hear her! As she pressed herself through the saloon-style doors that fed into the kitchen area―a feature likely left over from the days when servants were bustling around carrying trays of food―the clanking ceased. She heard the sound of an instrument clatter noisily to the floor, followed by a scrambling of footsteps.

“It’s okay,” Sophie said, “It’s just me, Sophie.” As she stood in the archway in front of the swinging doors, she found the kitchen to be vacant. Had she scared the plumber away? The feeling of apprehension Sophie had experienced the previous day returned. This time, it took hold of her gut… or, perhaps that was the curdled milk.

Ding dong! The doorbell sounded, startling Sophie. She swallowed, and made her way toward the entrance.
